Ines De Nil is a photographer and filmmaker who portrayed Berlin's queer autonomous scene in the late 1980s and 1990s, including in her photo book Zarte Sachen (1996). So far, however, only part of her extensive life's work has been shown publicly. Her works operate at the interface between documentary testimony and artistic photography. They open up insights into spaces of intimacy and self-expression that were and are of central importance for the development of a visible queer culture. Rooted in the subculture of the time, De Nil built genuine relationships with the people she photographed. Her work followed a simple principle: to show people as they wanted to be seen. This resulted in photographs full of sex- and body-positive imagery, characterized by shared community and mutual respect. "Ines De Nil. We Exist" shows that none of the people portrayed appear disguised or alienated. They exist - visibly and self-determined.
