Isaiah Collier comes from Chicago's vibrant music scene and has established himself there as a saxophonist, composer and organizer with a clear artistic approach. His work moves naturally between spiritual jazz, contemporary composition and community-oriented practice. Whether as leader of his ensemble The Chosen Few or in collaboration with others, Collier sees music as a space for connection, reflection and awakening.
On the saxophone, phrases can unfold with urgency or develop in concentrated restraint, often carried by repetition and careful transformation. The influences of the jazz greats are clearly audible in his playing, but never seem static. Rather, Collier understands tradition as something alive that must be actively questioned and, filtered through his own voice, gains new meaning in the here and now.
At domicil Dortmund, Collier and his band present a special tribute to John Coltrane to mark the 100th anniversary of the jazz icon's birth. This tribute is directly related to Collier's album Cosmic Transitions, which was recorded in the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio on Coltrane's birthday, using the same analog equipment that was once used for A Love Supreme. It is less about reconstruction and more about an inner alignment with Coltrane's spiritual urgency, his search for freedom and his belief in music as a transformative force.
Live, Collier's concerts are intense and focused at the same time. Themes are allowed to expand, rhythms gain traction and the collective energy grows organically over the course of the evening. His homage does not look back nostalgically, but firmly anchors Coltrane's legacy in the present
