Dr. Ephraim Carlebach - border crosser and school founder
Experience an evening about the life, work and significance of an extraordinary bridge builder on June 25, 2026 at 6 p.m.: Ephraim Carlebach (1845-1918) was a rabbi, educator and visionary - a man whose work for dialog, tolerance and innovative education is more relevant today than ever. This event takes place as part of the "17th Jewish Week in Leipzig - Tacheles 2026".
A biographical lecture and discussion will shed light on Ephraim Carlebach's life, his courageous fight for acceptance, his achievements as an educator and founder of the Jewish School Association in Leipzig and his work to reconcile the seemingly incompatible worlds of traditional Orthodox Judaism and modern, secular German life.
This is complemented by an insight into Hugo Gaudig's reform pedagogy and its practical implementation at the Carlebach School. An accompanying exhibition presentation shows photos and documents of Carlebach's life and deepens understanding. Musical contributions interweave Jewish literary and musical culture and create an atmospheric link between past and present.
For anyone interested in interreligious dialog, innovative pedagogy and Jewish cultural history.
