Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Judith Hill!
"Flame" captivates with powerful vocals and a rousing musical arrangement. The lyrics deal with darkness and pain and reveal Hill's inner strength: "Give me chaos and give me pain, but you can never extinguish my flame."
"I'm more resilient than I thought I was," Hill explains. After every blow that knocks me to the ground, I discover an inner strength that emerges stronger and more defiant than ever. Like iron and steel, my core has become impenetrable. On my darkest days, I plug in the amp and hear the pulsating sound of the guitar like a burst of energy that revitalizes my spirit. I am convinced that I will never be defeated.
"Letters From A Black Widow" is the follow-up to "Baby, I'm Hollywood!" (2021), which was critically acclaimed for its blend of funk, rock, blues and soul. Record Collector described it as "breathtakingly kaleidoscopic", while Echoes named it "Album of the Year" in a 5-star review. But whereas that album told the rollicking coming-of-age story of a mixed-race kid in bohemian Californian life, 'Letters From A Black Widow' is a powerful rallying cry; a soul/funk/gospel passion piece spectacularly written, arranged and performed by Hill.
Although Hill plays many of the instruments himself, the new album is not strictly a solo project. Built on an unshakable musical foundation that has been with her all her life, Hill's band consists of both of her parents, bassist Robert "Peewee" Hill and keyboardist Michiko Hill. She is also backed by John Staten (drums and percussion), Daniel Chae (strings) and a group of friends on background vocals.
