What was once taken for granted is becoming the exception for many: leisure time. While the pressure to perform is increasing, public spaces for communal experiences are becoming rarer. Whether due to admission charges, privatization or bans on use - places for non-purposeful activities are disappearing. One prominent example is the Kalkberg in Cologne-Kalk: a derelict area that seems lost to urban society due to barriers and fences. Yet it is precisely here, in the shadow of the city highway and surrounded by rubble, that the potential for a radical reinterpretation of urban planning and recreation lies.

That's why you have to go inside

KALKPARK 3001 transforms this inhospitable place into a utopian vacation resort. In the midst of rubble and overgrowth, performative islands of relaxation are created that celebrate idleness without the need for optimization. Guided by an audio walk, visitors explore the site, immerse themselves in the participatory, artistic history of the mountain and reoccupy the "sunny spots" between concrete and nature. It is an invitation to reclaim the unknown and closed places of the big city and to find quality of life where you least expect it.

The Kalkberg is a place full of contrasts: once a landfill site for chemical waste, today a vantage point with ecological significance. KALKPARK 3001 makes these hidden layers of Cologne's city history tangible and poses the question of who owns the space on which we stand. A project at the interface of urban activism, performance and local history.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the event. Admission after the start is unfortunately not possible.

Headphones will be provided on site.
The audio walk takes place outdoors. Weatherproof clothing is an advantage.
The route includes slight inclines. The terrain is uneven and requires sturdy footwear.
There are ribbons at the edge of the paths that mark the course of the trail. The path may not be left for the entire duration of the audio walk. Staff at the foot of the Kalkberg welcome the public and point out the starting point of the audio walk.
