Marc-Antoine Charpentier David and Jonathan

First performed in Paris in 1688, David and Jonathan belongs to the genre of the "tragédie lyrique" - the French opera form of the Baroque period, which was shaped by composers such as Charpentier, Lully and Marais. Unlike in the Italian opera of this period, the chorus plays a central role. The soloists only have the opportunity to show off their artistry in a few arias, which are primarily geared towards text comprehensibility. In terms of content, it is about the biblical story of the friendship between David and Jonathan from the books of Samuel. Our former assistant conductor Lars Schwarze will be conducting this "excavation", giving us an extraordinary concert experience!
