It begins with a vibration; different voices resonate. The resonance relationships are in motion. The possibility of a sudden break is therefore inherent in every relationship. However, the elements usually manage to prevent this. They give their situation meaning and a collective direction. A fabric develops that strives hopefully towards a goal. The resulting figures are finely nuanced, and yet they can grow ever higher to become enormous cathedrals.

Malstatt is in the tradition of freely played jazz. The musicians focus on the present moment and develop sound forms together with great attention to the expression of others. The improvisation is embedded in composed passages. Post-rock styles open up wide spaces that gradually develop into enormous dimensions. The arrangements in turn have an effect on the freer playing. They can be anticipated improvisationally, but sometimes the improvisers want to ignore them or play against them.

Sylvia Schmidt-Silas and Max Ischebeck break with the clichés of today's guitar-singing duo through interaction and a modern sound. Far beyond the traditional jazz idiom, the songs move between experimental pop and avant-garde. Delicate timbres from free improvisation can develop into drastically dissonant and unyielding forms of expression.
