A crime trail combines city discovery with real investigative work: you are out and about, exploring the district on your own and following an exciting story. You know the starting point and the facts of the case, everything else is up to you - you decide which lead to follow first and how to approach the case.
This time, the Agnesviertel is not about a classic act of violence, but about something that is often even more explosive: blackmail. The respected Cologne public prosecutor Max zu Ellinghausen is being put under pressure by an unknown person. Someone is threatening to make an old family secret public unless Max pays a large sum. Out of fear, he follows the instructions and deposits the money at the agreed location. But even after handing over the money, the threat doesn't stop. When you meet him, it quickly becomes clear that Max has his back to the wall. And the list of people who could have a motive is surprisingly long.
Now you come into play. You examine statements, look at possible motives and try to find out who is behind the blackmail. Is it a journalist hoping for a big scandal? A colleague with an open grudge? His wife, who perhaps knows more than Max thinks? Or someone else entirely? Perhaps even Max himself is not as innocent as he first appears.
Your investigation takes you through the Agnes district, which seems tailor-made for this case. Around Fort X, where the money was deposited, urban history meets an almost unreal tranquillity. Weißenburgstraße, with its Wilhelminian-style façades, appears sleek and calm, while Neusser Straße is lively and full of people, among whom observers and accomplices could easily hide. At the mighty St. Agnes Church, at the Alte Feuerwache community center and around Reichensperger Platz, the traces become denser piece by piece.
