What is it all about?

A significant group of works in the exhibition Fünf Freunde. John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twobley comes from the holdings of the Museum Ludwig, which received them as donations and loans from the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig.

How did these works come into the collection and what position do they occupy in it? And how do they relate to Peter Ludwig's understanding of art? What was the Ludwigs' relationship to the USA?

Carla Cugini, managing director of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, and Julius Redzinski, research volunteer at the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, will explore these and other questions together in their lecture.

Who are our guests?

Carla C ugini, who holds a doctorate in (art) history, has headed the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation since 2021. The foundation cooperates internationally with 30 public institutions in the fields of collecting, exhibiting and research. Carla Cugini previously headed the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst at the Museum Ludwig for 16 years. She is the editor of various art publications, most recently "Irene and Peter Ludwig. Contemporary Art in & from the GDR. Regina Wyrwoll in conversation with contemporary witnesses, published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, 2025.

Julius Redzinski is a research volunteer at the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation and works in particular on the Ludwigs' collection of art from the GDR. He studied art history at the Free University of Berlin and is pursuing a dissertation project at the Technical University of Berlin on the social history of artists with a focus on the National Socialist era.
