A modern fairy tale about a teacher who no longer wants to be one. The story of a grandmother in a Soviet prison camp. The suffering of a thwarted artist caught between everyday life and self-realization. The difficult question: What to do when the party runs out of salt and the police are at the door? The Central German Short Film Nights show a selection of the best short films from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, awarded at this year's KURZSUECHTIG KURZFILMFESTIVAL.

Quinn has a magical fridge that is constantly filled with new exotic delicacies. Her life and that of the people around her revolve around luxury, lust and ecstasy. But the fridge breaks down and requires a closer look at the origin of the delicacies.

"Suffering in Leipzig" (Klara Binnewitt, Endre Bye | 2023 | 14:30min | Leipzig)
A young artist in Leipzig tries to realize himself, with moderate success. His friend tempts him with cold Sterni, but he would rather use his time to paint. A mysterious woman accompanies and interviews the thwarted artist.

Two sisters reconstruct the memories of their Ukrainian-born grandmother, who was sentenced to forced labor in the Soviet Union as a traitor to the people. In conversation with their grandmother and mother, a dialog between three generations about war, expulsion, motherhood and loss emerges.

"Home is where the star fruits are sour" The relationship between Huy and his parents is complicated. Talking about their own history is difficult. To get closer to his parents, Huy seeks answers from his grandparents in Vietnam.

After Ms. Schröder yells at student Benny on a school trip, she stops going to class and lives for the day. When she hears a rumor about a bear that has escaped, she decides to get to the bottom of it and wanders through the empty small town.

Fritz is a talented youth footballer and on the lists of numerous Bundesliga scouts. But he's not really happy about it. The homophobia and constant sexism in the soccer cosmos are getting to him. He is faced with a difficult decision.

"Les Rites de Passage" (Johannes Krell, Florian Fischer | 2024 | 14:41min | Harz / Leipzig)
A cloud of ash lands gently in the waves of a river. Light penetrates the interior of a tree through myriads of holes. Monocultural forests are infested by parasites and now form the breeding ground for future life forms. A film about earthly and mythological passages of becoming and passing away.

"Late Summer 91" (Olaf Held | 2024 | 02:58min | Chemnitz / Erzgebirge)
A birthday party in the Erzgebirge at the beginning of the 90s, captured by a video camera that nobody can operate properly. Lots of beer and silly grimaces. But then the mood changes: the band only plays blues, the salt runs out and the police are at the door.
