Lê Quan Ninh & Michel Doneda
Free improvisation - sound research - moment-based performance
For more than three decades, French percussionist Lê Quan Ninh and saxophonist Michel Don eda have enjoyed an intense musical partnership that is one of the most influential in the European free improvisation scene.
Lê Quan Ninh (*1961, Paris) is a classically trained percussionist and one of the most innovative sound researchers of his generation. He began with piano and turned to percussion in his youth, later discovering free improvisation. His musical work moves between contemporary music, performance, dance and experimental improvisation. Ninh often uses unusual playing techniques and objects to open up sound spaces that go beyond conventional rhythm and structure. He was a co-founder of the percussion ensemble Quatuor Hêlios and Ensemble]h[iatus and has released over 40 recordings in various formations.
Michel Doneda (*1954, Brive-la-Gaillarde) is considered one of Europe's outstanding saxophone improvisers. As an autodidact, he developed an extraordinarily rich tonal vocabulary on soprano and sopranino saxophone. In the early 1980s, he founded a saxophone trio in Toulouse and soon immersed himself in the international independent scene - with performances and collaborations with musicians such as John Zorn, Fred Van Hove, Barre Phillips and many others. His playing oscillates between the softest breath sounds, lyrical lines and eruptive, almost screaming textures. Doneda is not only present on stage, but is also active as an initiator of improvised projects and artistic networks.
Together, Ninh and Doneda explore sonic boundaries in which each performance is a unique, in-the-moment conversation. Their duos often unfold fragile, dense soundscapes in which listening and interaction become the central creative energy. The joint exploration of sound phenomena - beyond narrative or melodic conventions - takes center stage.
Their collaboration is documented in many years of concert activities and on recordings such as the duo album Aplomb (Vand'Oeuvre) and other joint projects that focus on uncompromising presence and the exploration of sound as an immediate experience.
