What happens when citizens reclaim a theater? This is exactly what is happening in Erfurt: a playhouse that has been vacant since 2003 is being transformed into a new cultural venue through civic engagement - with dance theater, a cinema club, free radio and much more. Committed people have been driving this vision forward for over ten years - organized in Thuringia's first cultural cooperative. Over 900 members have collectively contributed more than one million euros - the cooperative shares represent their own share of the bank loan for the purchase and renovation of the building. The building was purchased by the municipality in 2020 and construction has finally been underway since the beginning of last year!
Long before the renovation, the building was used for temporary performances: theater, film, concerts, festivals and discourse - improvised, with building materials and a lot of idealism - all organized on a voluntary basis.
The KulturQuartier Schauspielhaus is a model of how culture can be organized from below and anchored in the city in the long term.
In this practical dialog series, practitioners and pioneers show how cooperative urban development can work: Together with them, we will explore how Kreativlabor München, and creative centers and urban development initiatives in general, can be organized and survive independently, collaboratively and for the common good in the long term. The event sees itself as an open space for dreaming, visioning and free speculation! We invite you to join us for music and drinks at the end.
Learning from... is aimed both internally, i.e. the actors on the premises of the Kreativlabor München, and externally. We expressly invite public welfare-oriented SMEs, other creative centers and urban development initiatives.
A series within the framework of BottomUp. Working sustainably together! Curated and moderated by Laura Bruns, Team stadtstattstrand. The series will end with a final symposium, probably in April 2027, followed by a brochure with the most important learnings and take-aways.
