Hilma af Klint - this is the name of a Swedish painter whose highly aesthetic abstract imagery was created around 1900 (well before Kandinsky), but was forgotten by the art world for many decades. Yet she was one of the very first women to attend an art academy and decide to pursue a professional career as a painter. She was able to make a living from her initial portraits and landscapes, but was dissatisfied with the conventional style of representation. The expression of emotional and spiritual content became particularly important to her. Encouraged by her engagement with the works of Edvard Munch, she ventured into a new kind of painting exclusively with abstract, intensely colored forms.
As a radical pioneer, the artist was ignored long enough by the male-dominated art world - now Hilma af Klint is finally beginning to be recognized as a master of modernism.
