German title: DER FREMDE
Algiers, 1938: Meursault, a young Frenchman, learns of his mother's death and attends her funeral - without any recognizable grief or emotion. Shortly afterwards, he begins an affair with Marie, a colleague, and resumes his usual life. But when his neighbor Raymond Sinès involves him in a dubious story, a hot day at the beach culminates in murder. The ensuing trial sheds light not only on the crime, but also on Meursault's distance from society and his indifference to norms.
In this remake of the famous 1942 novel "L'Étranger" by Albert Camus, successful director François Ozon makes the existential emptiness and emotional isolation depicted in the book tangible on film with a stylistically dense production. A deeply human and aesthetically convincing adaptation.
Adapted from the novel culte by Albert Camus, L'Étranger comes to life under the subtle camerawork of François Ozon.
