From May 8 to 12, 2026, numerous campaigns will take place throughout Germany to mark ME/CFS Awareness Day on May 12 - including in Leipzig.

The aim of the #LiegendDemo Leipzig initiative is to raise public awareness of the disease and to call for binding, effective research and better care for those affected. ME/CFS is a serious chronic disease that is associated with considerable restrictions in everyday life.

Around a quarter of those affected are housebound, many are bedridden and dependent on care. According to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, over 620,000 cases of treatment with ME/CFS were documented nationwide in 2023 alone, including many children and adolescents. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of approved medication and nationwide specialized care structures.

The first Leipzig demonstration will take place on May 9, 2026 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the market square in Leipzig city center. Visitors can expect a demonstration while lying down with speeches, an information stand and a choir. We kindly ask you to bring a surface (e.g. sleeping mat or camping bed) to lie on. The demonstration while lying down is symbolic of those who can no longer get out of bed.
