In "Magnolia", the stories of nine people living in L.A. are brought together in a single day. For example, we meet the terminally ill TV producer Earl Partridge (Jason Robards), who is suffering from cancer and is being cared for by Phil Pharma (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who confesses his sins to him. Earl loved his wife, but he cheated on her. He asks Phil to find his son Frank Mackey (Tom Cruise), who runs a macho TV show called "All Power to the Dicks" with great success (among men).

We also meet show host Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), also suffering from cancer, who only has two months to live. He runs Earl's best show, "What did kids know?", in which three children compete against three adults in a quiz. Gator tries to talk to his daughter Claudia (Melora Walters, with a fantastic performance) in the face of his imminent death. He confesses to his wife Rose (Melinda Dillon) that he has cheated on her. But there is nothing else he can say.

Gator's show features Stanley Spector (Jeremy Blackman), a super kid who seems to know everything, driven by an ambitious father (Michael Bowen). But during a quiz show, Stanley suddenly refuses to answer Gator's questions. He no longer wants to.

And then there's Donnie Smith (William H. Macy), formerly "Quiz Kid Donnie Smith", who, like Stanley, was a celebrated show star as a child. Now Donnie is at the end of his rope, fired by his boss Solomon Solomon (Alfred Molina), unhappily in love with a bartender.
