Manfred Schoof was born in Magdeburg on April 6, 1936. He studied in Kassel and Cologne in the 1950s and with his quintet, the "Old Friends", he inspired and significantly influenced the development of European free jazz in the 1960s. The great romantic of the European jazz avant-garde played with jazz greats such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Klaus Doldinger, Wolfgang Dauner, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Peter Brötzmann, but also with the Clarke Boland Big Band, Kurt Edelhagen and Gil Evans. As a musical all-rounder, Manfred Schoof has composed choral and orchestral works, as well as countless film and television scores such as the ARD morning show, TV thrillers, series and the "Sendung mit der Maus". The award-winning musician was a professor at the Cologne University of Music for many years and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
On April 20, we will be celebrating his 90th birthday with Manfred and some of his musical friends and companions with a concert in Cologne's Stadtgarten.
