Four types. Four microphones. Nothing else.
The new program
Some people still think that a cappella is a dusty domain for bland musical performances with no oomph. They've reckoned without MAYBEBOP! Some 25 years after they were founded, they are more fresh than ever and delight in subverting all expectations. What this band has been doing full-time for a quarter of a century is far more than mere vocal acrobatics. It is an exploration of the essence of musical expression, distilled down to the purely human: the voice. The results are original, German-language compositions that move elegantly between sharp-tongued satire, profound reflection, touching empathy and absurd comedy.
MAYBEBOP is intellectually agile and politically unambiguous. They stand for tolerance and openness, their lyrics are a clear rejection of all forms of populism. Their declared aim is not only to sing about the social and the good, but to actively fuel it. Their idealism is pleasantly down-to-earth and firmly anchored in reality. Their fundamentally likeable, self-deprecating interaction alone is balm for every audience's soul.
MAYBEBOP refuses to stick to a set program. The set list is put together anew every evening, the audience decides what is sung: Brand new songs meet celebrated classics, interaction meets spontaneity, curiosity meets risk-taking. Every concert evening is like a surprise bag, celebrating the magic of the moment and thus nothing less than life itself.
Why can MAYBEBOP be so effortlessly spontaneous? Quite simply: they have practiced! Every sung note is precisely calibrated. The sound is an audiophile masterpiece that makes the invisible audible. The lighting design is a dramaturgical extension of the musical discourse. The video show sets highlights and becomes a visual echo of the pointed lyrics. MAYBEBOP tickles the brain, touches the soul and caresses the heart. You can never predict what the four of them have in store. The only thing you can be sure of is what you're going to get: four guys. Four microphones. Nothing else.
The concert takes place as part of the 24th International A Cappella Week Hanover (April 25 to May 3, 2026). More information at: www.acappellawoche.com
Since 2001, the Hanover International A Cappella Week has been inspiring the lively choral scene in the city and its surroundings for almost a quarter of a century. Founded by Sandra van de Loo and Roger Cericius, the festival quickly developed from a one-off event to an annual highlight, only taking a break in 2020/21 due to the pandemic. Every year, established greats of the a cappella world meet up with up-and-coming newcomers and present themselves and their skills in concerts that could not be more diverse. Exciting workshops and master classes during the festival also give rise to new musical collaborations that enrich the regional cultural landscape in the long term. To date, over 200 concerts with several thousand international artists have been presented, delighting around 100,000 visitors from all over the world. As one of the two leading vocal festivals in Germany (alongside Leipzig), the Hanover International A Cappella Week is regarded internationally as a beacon of the scene.
