Lera Auerbach, pianist, composer and author, has been one of the most important female voices in new music for decades. Flights of the Angakoks (2023) describes the metaphysical flight of the Arctic shamans from the present back into the mythical past. Supported by numerous spirits, they travel through five states of consciousness and nine time zones to the goddess Sedna, the mother of the seas, and ask her for the renewal of life. In the composition, the virtuoso piano takes on the role of the shaman, while the choir is assigned the part of the surrounding world of nature and spirits.
