In recent seasons, Christoph Marthaler has developed two unusual evenings at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg based on poems, letters and sketches by authors who, for various reasons, chose to retreat completely into rooms (Emily Dickinson) and towers (Friedrich Hölderlin) in order to produce the greatest literature from the smallest spaces. After "Die Sorglosschlafenden, die Frischaufgeblühten" and "Im Namen der Brise", the focus is now on rather unknown parts of the work of Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek, who dissects the freewheeling world events from her apartments in Vienna and Munich and gives them an unmistakable voice.
