Möbel mit Geschichte(n)

In the organizer's words:

As objects made by and for people, furniture is an integral part of our everyday lives. It is their use and thus ultimately their relationship to people that characterizes them and determines their design. On closer inspection, furniture therefore gives us no fewer impressions of people's lives than pictures, for example, could. Often they even become image carriers themselves, as some of the exhibits clearly demonstrate. The spread of certain types of furniture, pictorial motifs or building materials also makes it possible to reconstruct international contexts. As mobile objects, furniture therefore also bears witness to intercultural exchange. Through trade, sales or the adaptation of contemporary fashions, complex local and global interdependencies also become visible. A closer look at deliberate stylistic quotations or the appropriation of various pictorial themes therefore opens up fascinating furniture histories right up to the present day. Against this background, the exhibition "Furniture with history(ies)" examines in seven themed rooms what the objects tell us about people and life in their respective times through their shape and form.

The exhibition is part of the "Selected" series, which makes objects from the currently closed MAKK Historical Collection accessible.
