In 1899, Christian (Ewan McGregor), a writer who has moved to Paris from the countryside, falls in love at first sight with Satine (Nicole Kidman), star of the Moulin Rouge. The courtesan dreams of a career as an actress and is prepared to do anything for it. Now she is to give herself to a rich duke in order to secure the financing for a play at the Moulin Rouge. But then she meets Christian and immediately loses her heart.
