Who was the mysterious "gray messenger" who ordered a requiem from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for an anonymous client in 1791? An emissary of dark forces? Or even death itself, knocking on Mozart's door? All kinds of myths surround the creation of his Requiem. After all, it is uncanny that the composer himself was torn from life unexpectedly in the middle of working on this requiem mass at the age of 35 and left it behind as a fragment.
At some point, the story was discovered. The order was far less mystical than the legend would suggest: a well-heeled impostor had allowed himself the impudent luxury of ordering a masterpiece from superstar Mozart and then passing it off as his own product. Audacity - and at the same time one of the greatest strokes of luck in music history: without this trickery, the Mozart Requiem might not exist, that truly supernatural stroke of genius that touches the world and makes it a little better.
Ton Koopman, grand seigneur of historical performance practice, is once again a guest of the Gürzenich Orchestra and juxtaposes the Requiem with Mozart's late Symphony K. 550. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir and an exquisite quartet of soloists open up the heavens.
