Future building: Sustainable visions for public spaces as a third place

In a time of climate change and increasing urban density and social challenges, the question arises: How can future construction methods transform public spaces into lively, sustainable places for coming together, learning and experiencing?

As part of the NEUVERORTUNG event series, the panel discussion offers an interdisciplinary look at strategies and concepts that combine space, sustainability, flexibility and social exchange.

Jens Jakob Happ, editor of "Für eine nachhaltige Architektur der Stadt", presents a multifaceted discourse on the reorientation of architecture from a sustainability perspective. He sheds light on topics from architecture, building materials science, urban planning, climate technology and philosophy and poses key questions such as: "How to build? Build at all? Or just rebuild?"

Tom Bergevoet gives an insight into his book "The Flexible City: Sustainable Solutions for a Europe in Transition", a practical handbook that rethinks urban planning and development in Europe. He argues for a rethink: the focus is on restructuring, redensification and upgrading existing urban spaces instead of expansion.

Eva Kraus, curator of the exhibition "WEtransFORM. On the future of building", brings perspectives from the field: the exhibition brings together around 80 projects that focus on climate resilience, biodiversity, sufficiency, revitalization and circular cycles. The exhibition will take place at the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn from June 6, 2025 to January 25, 2026.

NEUVERORTUNG is being organized with the kind support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and in cooperation with the Haus der Architektur (hdak) as part of the event series "One hour of building culture every Tuesday at 7 pm".

The event will be partly held in English.
