NON-ALIGNED NEWSREELS - Voices from the debris - Mila Turajlić (Belgrade / Paris)

With the collapse of Yugoslavia, the legacy of the Non-Aligned Movement was also forgotten. Founded in Belgrade in 1961, it fought for decolonization, disarmament and anti-racism as an alternative to the power blocs of the Cold War - but remains largely unmentioned in Western historiography.

Serbian artist and documentary filmmaker Mila Turajlić spent 10 years trawling through the archives of the Yugoslav newsreel together with Tito's long-time cameraman Stevan Labudović. The footage documents Tito's travels to Africa and Asia in search of new alliances in an era of global upheaval.

Turajlić's documentary live performance is a search for traces in the visual memory of the global South. Historical film footage, eyewitness accounts and private archives open up decolonial perspectives, lend a new voice to the political utopias of that era and raise the question of how memory can give rise to new impulses for international understanding.
