1959: Paris is in turmoil. The "Cahiers du Cinéma" had been defending a certain idea of cinema for almost ten years. A new generation of filmmakers emerged; their names were François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette, Éric Rohmer, Alain Resnais, Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy. Nouvelle Vague, which premiered in Cannes in May 2025, retells the production and genesis of Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 cult film Out of Breath starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, which is considered a classic of French cinema and the movement of the same name.
As a great storyteller, American independent filmmaker Richard Linklater delivers a stirring homage to an iconic work of film history. Far from the didactic film, Nouvelle Vague captures the crazy energy and intellectual and cultural excitement of the time. This is Linklater's first project to be shot entirely in French.
