[Off-ICMC] Installation & Performance: Andrea Mancianti & Tom De Cock – Autophagy III

In the organizer's words:

Autophagy III is the final chapter of the Autophagy cycle developed jointly by Tom De Cock and Andrea Mancianti. It is a performative installation created from the dialog between Tom De Cock's micro-percussion setup and a multi-channel, immersive system of controlled percussion instruments distributed around the audience. The micro-percussion setup includes a series of small, amplified and electronically processed instruments such as crotales, Tibetan singing bowls, frame drums, cymbals and square plates made of materials such as wood, stone and metal.

The cycle continues the joint research on self-regulating acoustic systems, electro-acoustic instrument making and unstable DIY instruments. The world premiere took place in 2024 at the Concertgebouw Brugge and reflects the ongoing artistic research of both participants.

The audience is embedded in a constantly changing sound field created by the interaction with sixteen suspended, controlled percussion instruments. Each instrument behaves like an element in an artificial ecosystem: it has individual behaviors, can use mechanisms of self-regulation and at the same time is able to perceive the ensemble with simple analysis methods. The installation is complemented by an interactive lighting system developed in collaboration with Roberto Fusco.
