What to do with fading ideals and disappointed illusions in the face of a world that is becoming increasingly incomprehensible? It is an oppressively hot summer in the country. Sonja and her uncle Wanja have worked the farm for Sonja's father, the art professor from the big city, for years - with blood, sweat and tears. When the professor retires and returns to the countryside with his new wife Elena, the farm suddenly comes to a standstill. Nothing works anymore. Vanya has given his all to finance the professor's life for science. Up close, however, he is a bitter disappointment: lethargic, he struggles with his own insignificance. And the equally hard-working Sonja? She loves the doctor Astrow from the neighborhood, who now comes to visit regularly. But Astrov has given up on love and prefers to devote himself to vodka. He can no longer bear the suffering of the world and fights a last, illusory battle against deforestation. What to do now? Nobody knows anymore. In his profound comedy from 1896, Anton Chekhov takes a merciless look at a society in decline that has lost all its coordinates. Conflicts of material existence meet midlife crises and dreams that have been dreamed away. With ONKEL WANJA, Israeli director and actor Itay Tiran introduces himself to Cologne. His most recent productions have been at the Burgtheater Vienna and the Gesher Theater in Tel Aviv.
