After the Peace of Westphalia, cultural life in the Holy Roman Empire flourished again. The melodically elegant and contrapuntally clear trio sonatas by the Venetian Giovanni Legrenzi quickly spread from southern Germany to Hamburg. Philipp Friedrich Buchner, organist in Frankfurt and later Kapellmeister in Mainz, spent time in Venice in the 1640s. In 1662, his collection "Plectrum Musicum" translated Legrenzi's musical language into a German idiom. The variety of instruments - violin, viola da gamba, bassoon and continuo - reflects the exchange between Italian musical culture and German compositional art. Johann Rosenmüller worked as a musician in Venice for decades after fleeing Leipzig and combines Venetian lightness with German compositional artistry in his works.
