Electress Sophie of Hanover commissions a portrait of the great thinker Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. However, the scholar is not at all in the mood for it. During the sittings for the painting, a passionate battle broke out between the philosopher and the young painter over the truth of image and likeness, reality and art. With his portrait of Leibniz, legendary director Edgar Reitz returns to the big screen and devotes himself to one of the most influential universal scholars of modern times. Celebrated at the 75th Berlinale and featuring a top-class cast including Edgar Selge, Lars Eidinger, Barbara Sukowa and Aenne Schwarz, the film is a clever and shrewd exchange of blows between scholars and artists and shows the countless facets of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
