Jealousy, love, hatred, intrigue and finally a happy ending - the biblical story of Queen Esther at the Persian court truly has the makings of a series. Esther is the main character in the latest play by the Jewish puppet theater Bubales from Berlin. "The Secret of the Queen" is dedicated to the Jewish festival of Purim. It gives courage and hope and makes young and old laugh.
With a clever trick, Queen Esther - herself a Jewess - foiled the devious plan of an evil vizier to exterminate the Jews in the Persian Empire. Together with her cousin Mordechai, she saved many Jewish lives. To this day, Esther and Mordechai are celebrated with a lot of rum-tata. On Purim, a reading from the Esther scripture takes place in all synagogues around the world. The story is also often re-enacted theatrically as a fun Purim play. The Bubales puppet theater is part of this tradition.
