The frame around the picture has more than just a technical function, nor is it just decoration: the way in which the painting or photograph is framed can say something about the work, place it in a certain interpretative perspective and direct the viewer's gaze. The history of the frame is an exciting but rarely considered chapter. In contemporary art, the frame as an object becomes part of the representation in a special way. And even where the strips are dispensed with completely, there is a "framing", a framing in the figurative sense: the narrative that wants to define a view of the picture or object.
