Poetic portrait of the Austrian painter Maria Lassnig.

SLEEPING WITH A TIGER - the title of a painting by the painter and media artist Maria Lassnig, who died in 2014. Director and screenwriter Anja Salomonowitz tells her story as a somewhat different kind of biopic, with surreal interludes and Birgit Minichmayr's portrayal of the artist at all stages of her life.

At its core, it is a feminist story, a tale of the survival of a female artist in the male-dominated art market. For a long time Lassnig stood in the shadow of her lover, the painter Arnulf Rainer, before she was later recognized as an important voice in contemporary art. A recurring element in the film is the work in the studio, whereby the process of painting is less interesting for the director than the "before", the pondering in front of the blank canvas, the preparation of the work. A central concept in Lassnig's art is "body awareness", the transfer of physical perceptions into the realm of painting; it is precisely this consideration of the creative act that Salomonowitz wants to make visible on film.
