The old and the new Altona - history(ies) of displacement and gentrification: a tour of building, housing and living.
Altona has been getting too crowded for 200 years. On this tour we encounter stories of densification, displacement and gentrification. The route leads from the historic industrial estate of the former Feldtmann wire pen factory in Ottensen to the reform buildings of the 1920s/30s and the Neue Mitte Altona. On the way through the district, the urban development up to the present day becomes comprehensible: from the workers' quarter with commercially used backyards to the large-scale planned development area on the site of the former Altona goods station. Whenever possible, controversial, current urban planning projects and neighborhood initiatives are included and can be discussed further at the end point, in the Cafe Blaue Blume.
A historian will guide you through her neighborhood. With in-depth knowledge of the local history and current plans, we will take you off the beaten tourist track. Photos, plans and eyewitness accounts from our archives will support the search for clues on site.
