Sara Decker: Expand

Sara Decker is currently working and touring as bandleader with her new quintet Expand, consisting of Heidi Bayer (trumpet), Carlotta Ribbe (vibraphone), Tabea Kind (bass) and Michala Østergaard Nielsen (drums).

For her third album "Expand", Decker gathered long-time musical companions in the studio and created a multi-faceted work between advanced pop and modern vocal jazz. With this album, she builds on her earlier successes and at the same time opens a new chapter in her international career. Decker processes personal experiences and thoughts. "With every production, I get closer to my own sound," she says. The album combines clear melodies with harmonic sophistication and rhythmic complexity. In addition to Decker's warmly timbred, versatile voice, the musicians set individual accents with subtle solos and shape the transparent, lively band sound.

For the first time, Sara Decker has gathered an all-female band around her. This aspect can certainly be read politically, but was not at the forefront of the decision: "As women are still underrepresented in jazz, I think it's important that we support each other as colleagues and make each other shine. First and foremost, however, I wanted to work with friends with whom I am connected beyond the music." The album title "Expand" refers to the expansion to a quintet as well as Decker's growing artistic sovereignty as a singer, composer and bandleader with an international profile.
