A brutal murder shakes the small town of Woodsboro - the victims are schoolgirl Casey (Drew Barrymore) and her boyfriend. But the bloody deed of the masked killer is just the start of a whole series of murders that quickly reaches the circle of friends of young Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), whose mother Maureen Prescott was found raped and murdered exactly one year ago. The current crimes call sensational reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) onto the scene, who has already written a successful book about the murder and is convinced of the innocence of the condemned murderer and suspects a connection with the current events. While Sidney is terrorized by the murderer on the phone and only narrowly escapes a murder attempt, everyone is soon suspected of being the perpetrator.
