"Haffner has hidden a magnificent novel from us for ninety years," writes publicist Uwe Wittstock. What is the story of this novel?
Among many other things, Sebastian Haffner is famous for not having corrupted himself under National Socialism. He ended the law career he had begun in 1933 and soon considered leaving, finally emigrating to London with his wife in 1938. Before 1933, he still had great literary ambitions and wrote, among other things, "Abschied" (Farewell). The passage of time threw everything into disarray and the novel only turned up after Sebastian Haffner's death in 1999, when his son Oliver Pretzel found it in Haffner's desk next to the manuscript of Haffner's famous "History of a German".
