When their father dies, the sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood's days at their stately Norland Park estate in the southern English county of Sussex are numbered. Their new landlord is their half-brother from their father's first marriage. His haughty wife Fanny does not want to share the estate with anyone. Elinor and Marianne soon move with their mother and youngest sister Margaret to another county, where Sir John Middleton, a well-meaning cousin of their mother, offers them a cottage on his country estate Barton Park. Their financial means are now very limited.
