When asked whether she identifies as human, a woman's voice answers from off-screen: "I am partly human, I recognize that, but I am not fully human." SIRENS CALL follows the story of the non-binary protagonist Una from Oregon (USA) and enriches it with fictional elements. Una identifies as a "Mersona" - a mixture of human and mermaid. Born as such, she returns to earth in human form.
However, in a society characterized by alienation and consumerism, she feels alienated and isolated. Her search for like-minded sea people in the USA is unsuccessful. Instead, she meets mermaids in disguise who sing nationalist-conservative hymns and fall for the objectifying gaze of the public.
Frustrated and increasingly physically exhausted, Una struggles with the stifling heat, dryness and poisoned air of the earth. At the end of her tether, she unexpectedly receives a message from an unknown hitchhiker. This leads her to Moth, a non-binary teenager with whom she is able to make a real connection for the first time. Together, the two set off in search of other Mersonas and pursue the vision of a life of solidarity according to their own values.

In their hybrid working method, the artist duo Gossing/Siekmann interweave documentary with fictional elements and reflect on themes such as fluid body attributions, trauma and utopian visions of the future in a society characterized by climate change, isolation and division. SIRENS CALL is a hypnotic road movie whose atmospheric visual and sound worlds are deeply moving and resonate for a long time.
