Sun & Concrete

Berlin-Gropiusstadt, summer 2003.

The sun burns on concrete, the days are long, money is tight.

Luca grows up with his friends Gene and Jules among prefabricated buildings, cramped conditions and contradictory expectations. School is a minor matter, prospects are rare. Instead, big brothers, fathers, teachers - and not least rap lyrics - shape their image of how to assert themselves.

When the new classmate Sanchez proposes an adventurous plan, a way out suddenly seems within reach: breaking into their own school to steal the new computers. A quick way out of the shortage, they think. But the idea turns into a risky game that puts the four's friendship to the test and forces them to make decisions for which there are no easy answers. Between violence, loyalty and the desire to belong, the Neukölln youths are confronted daily with the questions of the street: "Who's looking? Why is he looking? How long do I hold eye contact? Do I walk that way? Which subway compartment is best for me to get into? Who does he know? Who do they hang out with? Is he crass? Hand over my cell phone or run away? Fight or let them beat you? The smarter one gives in? Or: The smarter one gives in?"

Based on the novel Sun and Concrete by Felix Lobrecht, the play tells the story of growing up under precarious conditions - direct, unembellished and full of energy. A story about friendship, responsibility and the search for a place in a world that leaves little room.
