Stadtteilrundgang: NS-Zwangsarbeit in Volkmarsdorf

With over 75,000 people affected and more than 500 accommodations within the city limits, Leipzig played a central role in the system of National Socialist forced labor. While Saxon armaments companies such as HASAG used forced laborers on a large scale, an often forgotten chapter of this history took place away from the large companies and collection camps.

Volkmarsdorf and Neustadt-Neuschönefeld were typical, densely built-up working-class districts during the Nazi era. It was mainly medium-sized businesses such as car repair shops and laundries that were located here and took advantage of the cheap labor. Large companies such as HASAG, Erla-Werke and Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe accommodated their forced laborers in the numerous restaurants and dance halls. They lived next door to the people of Leipzig.

The tour leads through Volkmarsdorf and Neustadt-Neuschönefeld - past former workplaces and camps, of which only a few traces are still visible today.
