The exhibition tells the story of the state capital from the end of the 18th century to the present day with authentic exhibits: From the social and technical progress of the rapidly growing royal residence city to the city of fine dust. From the inventors and the industrial metropolis of the founding years to the social commitment of the residents to the poor and sick or to working-class children in the summer retreats of the forest homes. Nothing is left out that has moved the people of Stuttgart: the hard-won freedom of the press, the courageous gay movement, the deaths of the RAF, the Nazi era or the unresolved question of the city's foundation. And the question of who the people of Stuttgart are is also addressed.
The tour begins with a large multimedia model of the city. Here, visitors can find their way around the city. All around, in the "City Talks", there are objects and audio plays to discover. At the interactive "Geist" and "Gestalt" stations, visitors can pick up models and read them from media tables to discover the exciting stories behind them. In the two mirror-image "Century Rooms", the narrative becomes a visual pleasure with a dense variety of exhibits.
