Neoclassical / New Jazz
Simon Wangen and Philipp Sutter throw the title of their new project as a question into the living room of our long-standing hosts. Where Bill Evans formulated a demand in 1981, the two Cologne musicians want to put a question mark in times of uncertainty, crises and environmental destruction. But apart from politics and world affairs: Do you believe in spring? Of course! It's never too late to start something new, get creative and test your own limits.
"Do you believe in spring?" begins stormy and agitated, alternating between romantic, sad and beautiful moments and leads from a rather gloomy beginning to the final and eponymous piece in C major, which leaves the audience with a glimmer of hope.
Simon Wangen is a classically trained cellist, Philipp Sutter is a trained jazz pianist. On this instrumental album, their different musical roots merge into a lively mixture of neoclassical music, new jazz and Cinéma Nordique. Ten pieces are sometimes gloomy, sometimes wild, sometimes tender, always focusing on the dialogue between the two instruments, which harmonize so well. The subtle use of electronic effects constantly opens up new perspectives and builds a bridge to contemporary sound aesthetics. Cello and piano - this combination has been established for centuries, but still allows for new facets in 2025.
To the delight of all those who were unable to get tickets last year, Sutter & Wangen are now taking part in the festival for the second time. In addition to the tracks from their debut album, the duo also have other pieces in their repertoire.
