The Kola Peninsula, also known as Kolsky, is located in the far north-west of Russia. Due to its access to the Barents Sea and its border with Finland and Norway, this remote region is of great geopolitical and military strategic importance. Tanya Sharapova'sproject was created before and during the escalation of the Russian war against Ukraine and explores the influence of increasing militarization and propaganda on daily life in Russia's far north, far from the capital.
Tanya Sharapova is a documentary photographer from Russia who currently lives in Berlin. After working as a photo editor, travel photographer and author, she studied photography at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie. Her graduation project Kolsky was awarded the VG Bild-Kunst/Kulturwerk Foundation scholarship. Tanya's work explores the relationship between the individual and society, recently focusing on the themes of isolation, displacement and collective memory.
