The Royal Ballet: LA FILLE MAL GARDÉE

Lise, the only daughter of the widow Simone, is in love with the young farmer Colas, but her mother has much more ambitious plans for her. Simone hopes to marry her off to Alain, the son of the wealthy landowner Thomas. However, Lise, who is determined to marry Colas and not Alain, devises a plan to cheat her mother. 65 years after its premiere, the Royal Ballet presents Frederick Ashton's La Fille mal gardée. This affectionate depiction of village life, which combines exuberant humor with brilliantly imaginative choreography, is undoubtedly Ashton's declaration of love to rural England. With Ferdinand Hérold's cheerful score and Osbert Lancaster's colorful stage design, La Fille mal gardée transports us to a rural idyll.
