After five decades of band history, THE UNDERTONES have quite a few successful songs and a respectable discography to their name. On May 21, the Irish pop punks celebrate their birthday in Stuttgart at Im Wizemann.

"I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight, get teenage kicks right through the night" - the insistent guitar and raspy voice with which these words boom through the speakers are unmistakable for THE UNDERTONES. The classic "Teenage Kicks" is the decisive signpost in the quartet's career, catapulting them into the fast lane right at the start of their career.

The legendary DJ and radio presenter John Peel played the song twice in a row on his popular show and helped THE UNDERTONES to their big breakthrough in 1978 - he is said to have found the song so moving that parts of it adorn his gravestone. The group from Derry quickly attracted a great deal of attention. Four albums and many more hits that are still relevant today were to characterize the next few years before the project was put on ice for the time being when band member Feargal Sharkey left in 1983. Fortunately, the remaining members reunited 16 years later and, with new singer Paul McLoone, heralded the second chapter for THE UNDERTONES. The first album with a new line-up followed in 2003 with "Get What You Need" and since then various reissues have been released, including the self-titled debut album "The Undertones". The group can now look back on five turbulent decades, during which their love of rock'n'roll has never been lost sight of.
