In their photographs of half-timbered houses, Bernd and Hilla Becher document a vanishing everyday architecture that is deeply connected to the regional identity, artisanal tradition and industrial working world of the Siegerland, Bernd Becher's home region. The Bechers dedicated their first monographic publication, published by Schirmer/Mosel Verlag in 1977, to the half-timbered houses. The half-timbered houses thus refer to more than just a biographical reference and form the basis of Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographic work. Through their systematic, objective visual language, they transform these familiar building forms into silent witnesses of past living environments - between documentation, aesthetics and memory.
