Gold digging alone does not satisfy Daniel Plainview. A good twelve years after becoming a successful gold prospector, he runs a well-known oil company that his adopted son H.W. (Dillon Freasier) is later to take over. One night, the naive Paul Sunday (Paul Dano) goes to Plainview and his business partner Hamilton (Ciaran Hinds) and reports that there are almost infinite quantities of the black raw material under the ground of his parents' property. As it turns out, the stranger is right - Plainview senses his big opportunity. Almost effortlessly, he convinces the Sunday family to sell him their ranch, only Paul's obsessively religious twin brother Eli (also Paul Dano) is reluctant and demands a donation for the local church. Shortly after the drilling work begins, a serious accident occurs in which a worker loses his life and H.W. loses his hearing. Has the Sunday family made a deal with the devil?
