Stem cell donation can save lives | Fabian's story

Every year, around 3,000 patients in Germany need a life-saving stem cell donation. However, not everyone with blood cancer is able to find a suitable donor.

As part of the season opener in the summer of 2023, BVB launched a major typing campaign together with "blut transportiert", the KMSZ at Düsseldorf University Hospital, Blutkrebshilfe OWL, its "leuchte auf" foundation and the BVB fan section.

Fabian from Dortmund also registered for the campaign on Strobelallee before the test match against Ajax Amsterdam - with complete success. Only a short time later, he was informed that he had actually been identified as a suitable stem cell donor.

This success story encourages us to offer such a campaign again. That is why there will be another typing campaign with the same network partners as part of this year's season opener against Juventus Turin.

On 10 August 2025, fans and stadium visitors can register and be typed at the "blut transportiert" stand on Strobelallee (in front of the Rote Erde stadium) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - and thus become potential lifesavers themselves. Just like Fabian.

"The more people who do this, the more people can be cured in the end. The probability of a recipient being cured by a stem cell donation is around 80 percent," says the Dortmund lifesaver.
