Discussion series
Ukraine is going through its toughest times in this 5th winter of war. Millions of Ukrainians are freezing in inhumane conditions and suffering from the daily bombardment. And despite everything, it is worth taking a look, especially from Germany, at the resilience and unwavering will to reform that has characterized Ukraine for over 10 years now: Whether in the fight against corruption, in digitalization or in providing for those fighting, Ukrainian civil society often enough sets the tone.
We would like to discuss what exactly constitutes this civil society in interaction with other actors in Ukraine, how the citizens of Ukraine are withstanding the Russian attacks and which reforms are particularly important for the people on the occasion of what is now the 5th year of war.
Prof. Dr. Michael Dobbins, author of the book "The Political System of Ukraine", will provide an introduction to the country's key reform projects. Viola von Cramon will then discuss the reforms in the areas of democracy, the rule of law and the fight against corruption in greater depth with Michael Dobbins and Oksana Chorna.
In addition, a historical review of formative experiences such as forced Russification, the Holodomor, the expulsions and deportations under Stalin will provide orientation for a better understanding of today's political positions and civil society engagement.
The event is aimed at civil society activists and anyone interested in democratic change, social justice and social resilience. The aim is to counteract disinformation, open up differentiated perspectives on Ukraine and at the same time provide suggestions for civil society learning processes and opportunities for action in Germany.
